Use the Child Development Chart at every well-child visit to guide you in asking developmental questions and for your own observations, and keep it on file and update it. You can also make a copy for parents to take home to educate them and help them anticipate future development.
Use the Infant Development Inventory Parent Questionnaire at the 6, 9, 15 and 18 month visits to get you a “heads up” on the parent’s picture of their child.
Use the Child Development Review - Parent Questionnaire at the 2 year, 3 year and pre-kindergarten visits (and 30 month if you have one), and find out even more about parent concerns and the child’s present development. By addressing parent concerns at the start of the visit, you avoid “doorknob” questions as the visit ends.
Finally, educate parents by hanging our popular Developmental Wall Charts in waiting and exam rooms.
